Delta Senior School and Ngee Ann Polytechnic held the service-learning experience on May 2nd and 18th respectively.

Our goal was to educate beneficiaries on how to produce and edit their own video montage.

When I first learnt that the beneficiaries of this service-learning project are students from Delta Senior School, I did not know what to anticipate, apart from the fact that they are intellectually disabled, and they would thus demand more attention as opposed to a conventional student.

Hence, I was very concerned that I did not have what it took to manage the students because I always thought of them as a challenge for amateur teachers like myself in teaching them skills. However, I decided that having an open mind and being emphatic towards them should be the best way to go about.

Through these interactions with the students of Delta Senior School and the experience I gained, I was overwhelmed with gratitude as I am born in a position able to aid and support others. Hence, instead of comparing what others have that I do not have, I have learnt to be more appreciative and satisfied with the little things in my life.

I have learned to not cast any forms of judgement or stereotypical opinions on anyone. We often subconsciously undermine one’s ability to fulfill a task, particularly the ones with disabilities. We often doubt their capabilities, and therefore we choose not to offer them an opportunity to prove themselves, but rather to close them down.

This service-learning experience made me believe in the beneficiaries and others with similar conditions. Everybody deserves a chance in this society and they have the ability to accomplish great things. All it takes is for more people to believe in them.

In light of this learning, I will work towards seeing things from the point of gratitude and be more appreciative of the many things I could accomplish in life that might be impossible for people with special needs.

Though our actions and interactions might seem minuscule in our perspectives, however, to the beneficiaries, we may be someone that has made a tremendous and positive influence in their life, in which we may be the mentors they would never forget.
